CAR EMERGENCY KIT

What do I need in a car emergency kit?

At minimum: a charged phone solution, flashlight, warning triangles or other visibility gear, first-aid kit, water, basic tools, and a plan for a dead battery or flat tire.

Core roadside kit

  • Flashlight and spare batteries or a rechargeable light you maintain
  • Reflective triangles or other warning devices
  • Reflective vest
  • First-aid kit
  • Water and nonperishable snacks
  • Blanket or extra layer
  • Phone charger or power bank
  • Jumper cables or a maintained portable jump starter
  • Basic tools, duct tape, gloves, and rain protection

Flat-tire gear depends on the vehicle

Check whether your vehicle has a spare, jack, lug wrench, inflator, or sealant system. Do not copy a generic checklist without verifying what your car was designed to use.

Check the kit twice a year

Batteries discharge. Water and food age. Clothing needs change with the season. A five-minute spring and fall check is more useful than a forgotten kit that looked complete when you bought it.

Dead battery: cables or jump pack?

Jumper cables are inexpensive but require another vehicle and safe access to both batteries. A portable jump starter can work without a second car, but it needs to be kept charged and used according to its instructions. Either option is only useful if it matches your vehicle and you know how to use it safely.

Visibility matters before repair

If the vehicle is disabled near traffic, being seen is often more urgent than fixing the problem. Warning triangles, hazard lights, a reflective vest, and a flashlight help make you visible while you call for assistance or assess the situation.

Do not rely on the kit for problems you should not tackle roadside

A toolkit does not make every repair safe beside traffic. Move to a safer location when possible, follow roadside safety guidance, and call professional help when the situation is beyond a simple task you can perform safely.

Quick questions

Do I need both jumper cables and a jump starter?

No. Either can be useful. A jump starter is independent of another vehicle but must be maintained and charged.

Should I buy a prebuilt emergency kit?

It can be convenient, but compare its contents with the problems you actually want to be ready for.
