DOG FOOD STORAGE

What do I need to store dog food?

For dry food, the FDA recommends keeping it in the original bag when possible. Put the whole bag inside a clean, dry container with a snug lid if you want extra protection and easier storage.

Why keep the bag?

The bag carries the product name, lot number, manufacturer, and best-by information. That matters if there is ever a quality problem or recall.

If you pour food into a bin

Use a clean, dry container with a lid that fits well. Save the package information, and wash and fully dry the container between bags so old fats and crumbs are not left behind.

Where to keep it

Choose a cool, dry location away from direct sun and places where pets or pests can get into it. Avoid damp garages, porches, or other areas with large temperature and humidity swings when you have a better indoor option.

Container size should follow the bag size

Do not buy the biggest bin you can find just because it is labeled for dog food. A container that comfortably holds the unopened or opened bag you normally buy is easier to handle and clean. If you change food often or buy small bags, a giant bin may simply keep old residue around longer.

Keep the scoop clean too

Store the scoop so it stays dry and does not disappear into the kibble. Wash it when you clean the container. If family members feed the dog, use a clearly sized scoop or marked portion cup so “one scoop” means the same thing to everyone.

Wet and fresh foods are different

Canned, refrigerated, frozen, and fresh pet foods have different storage requirements. Follow the package directions and your veterinarian’s guidance for the food you use. This page’s container advice is mainly about opened dry kibble.
