FIRST APARTMENT
What do I actually need for my first apartment?

Start with the first night
You need a place to sleep, bedding, a towel, toilet paper, soap, a phone charger, drinking water, basic food, trash bags, and enough light to move around safely. If the shower needs a curtain and the unit does not have one, that belongs on the first-night list too.
Then cover the kitchen
You do not need a 16-piece cookware set. One useful pan, one saucepan, a cutting board, a decent knife, a spatula or spoon, a can opener, a few dishes, and food-storage basics will handle a lot of early meals.
Buy cleaning supplies for the messes you actually have
A simple starter set is enough: dish soap, sponge or brush, multipurpose cleaner that is appropriate for your surfaces, broom or vacuum, microfiber cloths, toilet brush, toilet cleaner, laundry detergent, and trash bags.
What can usually wait
- Matching storage bins before you know what needs storage
- Specialty kitchen gadgets
- Extra seating for guests you do not actually host yet
- Decor that solves no immediate problem
- Duplicate towels, dishes, and cookware
Before you buy anything, check what comes with the place
Walk through the apartment or review the lease before shopping. You may already have a refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher, window coverings, built-in lighting, shelving, trash service, laundry access, or other basics. Measure the rooms and doorways before ordering large furniture. That avoids buying a duplicate appliance or a piece of furniture that does not fit the room or cannot make the turn through the hallway.
Use a three-pass shopping plan
Pass one: first-night necessities. Pass two: things you miss during the first week. Pass three: comfort and organization after you understand the space. This is slower than buying everything in one giant trip, but it usually produces a better apartment and fewer unused purchases.
