CLEANING STARTER LIST

What cleaning supplies do I need for my first apartment?

Cover six jobs: dishes, bathroom, floors, laundry, everyday surfaces, and trash. That is enough to start.

A small starter set

  • Dish soap and sponge or dish brush
  • Multipurpose cleaner appropriate for your surfaces
  • Microfiber cloths or washable cleaning rags
  • Toilet brush and toilet cleaner
  • Broom and dustpan, vacuum, or mop based on the flooring
  • Laundry detergent
  • Trash bags
  • Rubber gloves if you prefer them

Check surfaces before buying specialty cleaners

Stone, finished wood, stainless steel, glass, and other materials may have different care requirements. The safest starter move is to know what you are cleaning before buying a cabinet full of chemicals.

What can wait

Dedicated cleaners for every room, powered scrubbers, large mop systems, and specialty stain products can wait until a specific problem shows up.

Match the floor tool to the floor

Hard floors may need sweeping, vacuuming, or damp mopping depending on the material. Carpet usually needs a vacuum. If the apartment is tiny, a compact vacuum may make more sense than a full-size machine. Read the flooring or landlord care guidance before using steam or strong chemicals on a surface you do not own.

Keep one small cleanup caddy

A portable caddy with cloths, gloves, a suitable everyday cleaner, and bathroom supplies makes routine cleaning easier in a small apartment. Keep laundry products with laundry and dish products in the kitchen. You do not need to centralize every bottle.

Do not mix cleaning products

Use products according to their labels. Mixing cleaners can create dangerous fumes or damage surfaces. More products do not make a better starter kit. A small set used correctly is the better first-apartment move.

Quick questions

Do I need a vacuum and a mop?

That depends on the flooring. Carpet usually needs a vacuum. Hard floors may need sweeping, vacuuming, or damp cleaning based on the material.

Should I buy disinfectant for everything?

No. Use cleaning products for their labeled purpose and match them to the surface and type of mess.
