FIRST APARTMENT KITCHEN

What kitchen stuff do I actually need?

You can cook a surprising amount with one skillet, one saucepan, one sheet pan, one useful knife, a cutting board, a few utensils, dishes, and food-storage containers.

The small starter setup

  • Chef’s knife or other comfortable all-purpose knife
  • Cutting board
  • Skillet
  • Saucepan with lid
  • Sheet pan
  • Spatula, large spoon, tongs
  • Can opener
  • 2-4 plates, bowls, cups, and place settings
  • Food-storage containers
  • Dish soap, sponge, and dish towel

Buy around how you eat

If you never bake, a mixer is not a starter essential. If you make rice four nights a week, a rice cooker may become useful quickly. Let your real meals decide which appliance earns cabinet space.

What can wait

Specialty gadgets, matching canister sets, extra glassware, serving platters, duplicate pans, and appliances for aspirational meals can wait.

Choose pieces that do several jobs

A medium skillet can cook eggs, vegetables, burgers, and many one-pan meals. A saucepan can handle pasta, rice, soup, oatmeal, and reheating. A rimmed sheet pan can roast vegetables, cook frozen foods, and catch drips. Multi-use pieces keep the first kitchen inexpensive and easier to store.

Do not forget the boring pieces

A can opener, cutting board, food-storage containers, dish towel, oven mitt, and a basic colander often solve more day-to-day problems than another countertop appliance. Add a kettle, coffee maker, toaster, or blender only if it matches what you actually eat and drink.

How many dishes do you need?

For one person, two to four place settings are enough to start. That gives you a clean backup without filling cabinets. If you regularly host family or roommates share meals, buy more when the pattern is real.

Quick questions

Do I need a cookware set?

Usually not. A skillet, saucepan, and sheet pan cover many basic meals and take less cabinet space.

What kitchen appliance should I buy first?

The one that matches what you already eat. There is no universal first appliance after the basic cookware.
