FIRST APARTMENT ESSENTIALS

What do I need first for a new apartment?

Buy for the first 24 hours first. Bedding, bathroom basics, a small kitchen setup, cleaning supplies, trash bags, chargers, and a few basic tools matter more than decor.

Day-one essentials

  • Mattress or sleeping setup, sheets, pillow, blanket
  • Towel, toilet paper, hand soap, shower needs
  • Phone charger and a lamp if built-in lighting is limited
  • Trash bags and paper towels or cleaning cloths
  • Drinking water and easy food for move-in day
  • One plate, bowl, cup, fork, spoon, and knife per person
  • Dish soap and sponge

First-week additions

  • Basic cookware and a cutting board
  • Laundry supplies
  • Broom, vacuum, or mop based on your floors
  • Simple toolkit with screwdrivers, pliers, tape measure, and hammer
  • Food-storage containers
  • Enough hangers and storage to solve actual clutter

What can wait

Decor, guest-room quantities, specialty appliances, matching storage systems, and furniture for spaces you have not figured out yet can wait. Living there teaches you what is actually missing.

Check the apartment before the shopping trip

Make a quick inventory of what is already installed and what you are bringing from home. Measure the bed area, windows, closet openings, and any space where you plan to place larger furniture. Confirm whether the bathroom needs a shower curtain and whether the kitchen has a microwave, dishwasher, or other appliances you were about to buy.

This one pass often removes several items from the list before money is spent.

Think in jobs, not rooms

Room-by-room lists are useful, but jobs are even better. You need to sleep comfortably, keep food safe, prepare a few meals, wash yourself, wash clothes, clean the floors you actually have, take out trash, charge devices, and handle small household tasks. Once those jobs are covered, the apartment is functional.

A few things people often forget

  • Toilet plunger
  • Basic fire-safe flashlight
  • Scissors and tape
  • Extension cord or power strip where appropriate
  • Can opener
  • Laundry basket or bag
  • Small toolkit
  • Replacement light bulbs only after checking the fixture type

Quick questions

Do I need to buy everything before move-in day?

No. Buy enough to sleep, bathe, eat, clean up, and handle basic household tasks. The apartment itself will tell you what is missing after you live there for a few days.

Should I buy furniture before I move in?

Only pieces you are sure will fit and that solve an immediate need. Measuring the room and doorways first prevents expensive mistakes.
